Welcome to the official portal of the Libre Standard framework, governed and maintained by the Libre Collective.
Libre Standard is an open standards framework for defining, maintaining, and publishing predictable, implementation-independent, and human-accessible standards. The framework is designed to grow across multiple disciplines, providing clear and consistent blueprints for organizing information, systems, processes, and other structured environments.
At present, LOGICS is the first and only published standard in the Libre Standard ecosystem. Additional standards may be introduced in the future as their specifications are formally developed and published.
1 The Libre Standard Framework
Many fields face unnecessary confusion because of conflicting conventions, proprietary dependencies, and unpredictable practices.
Libre Standard aims to address these challenges through open, vendor-neutral specifications built on the following principles:
- Domain-Independent: Designed to support standards across computing, information management, organizational workflows, creative work, physical systems, and other structured domains.
- Predictable and Plain Language: Written in clear, accessible language so that people with different levels of technical knowledge can understand and apply each specification.
- Open and Vendor-Neutral: Standards are designed for open adoption and vendor independence without requiring proprietary software.
- Implementation-Independent: Specifications define clear structures and rules without requiring one particular software product, platform, or implementation.
- Designed for Long-Term Stability: Published standards establish clear, version-controlled foundations that can evolve through controlled future versions.
2 Published Standards
The Libre Standard framework gives each published standard its own dedicated, version-controlled repository and documentation resources.
2.1 LOGICS
LOGICS - Libre Operational and Governance Instructions for Company Structure - is the first published standard in the Libre Standard catalog.
LOGICS defines a predictable, modular directory and storage architecture for organizing company information, files, records, and related business data environments.
Key characteristics include:
- Five-Level Architectural Model: Standardizes Group, Company, Module, Category, and Entry levels.
- Consistent Naming Rules: Defines predictable naming and structural rules for files and directories.
- Dynamic Entry Organization: Provides standardized approaches for subcategories, lifecycle states, dates, workspaces, and records.
- Storage Independence: Designed to operate across local filesystems, cloud storage, network storage, and repository workspaces while maintaining a consistent organizational structure.
- Implementation Independence: Defines the structure and rules without requiring a specific software platform.

3 Future Standards
LOGICS is currently the only published Libre Standard.
The Libre Standard framework is intended to expand over time with additional standards covering other areas where clear, predictable, and implementation-independent specifications are useful.
Future standards may address areas such as:
- Organizational and Operational Standards: Structures for business operations, information organization, and workflow management.
- Information and Data Standards: Naming systems, classification methods, metadata structures, and data organization.
- Creative and Media Standards: Organization and management of creative assets, design resources, and media collections.
- Physical and Spatial Standards: Classification, labeling, organization, and management of physical assets, spaces, and equipment.
- Governance and Legal Standards: Open governance models, licensing structures, community frameworks, and related organizational systems.
These areas represent the potential scope of future work. They should not be interpreted as published standards until their specifications have been formally developed and released.
4 Central Documentation Portal
Comprehensive documentation, tutorials, and reference guides for published Libre Standards are maintained through the central documentation portal.
The documentation portal provides guidance for adopting published standards, understanding their underlying principles, and following their official specifications.
As the Libre Standard ecosystem expands, additional standards and their documentation will be added to the same central platform.
5 Open Governance and Proposal Process
The Libre Standard framework is governed and maintained by the Libre Collective.
Standards are intended to be developed through a transparent and structured process that allows ideas to be proposed, reviewed, refined, and eventually published as formal specifications.
- Propose a Standard: Submit new standard concepts, suggest improvements, and participate in Requests for Comments through the Discussions Forum.
- Inspect Published Sources: Review published specifications, repositories, and project resources through the GitHub Organization.
- Learn About Governance: Learn about the governing principles, organizational structure, and related resources through the Libre Collective Portal.
A proposed idea is not considered a published standard until its specification has been formally developed, reviewed, versioned, and released through the Libre Standard ecosystem.
6 License and Attribution
Individual standards published within the Libre Standard framework are independent works and are governed by their respective licenses, which are provided directly within their dedicated repositories.
The license of a particular standard should therefore be consulted when adopting, redistributing, or incorporating that standard into another project.
